Obituary for (Ret.) Waltham Deputy Fire Chief Robert G. "Twitch" Yorston

Of Waltham, passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning May 14th, 2013 at Briarwood Nursing & Rehabilitation in Needham at the age of 86.

Born on September 23, 1926 in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada; son of the late Joseph H. Yorston and Mary E. (Steele) Yorston; Bob immigrated to the United States at an early age and has resided in Waltham ever since. He became a U.S. Citizen on November 16, 1953.

Bob graduated from Saint Charles High School in 1945 and furthered his education receiving his Associate Degree in Fire Science from MassBay Community College in 1976.

He was drafted into the United States Army from High School and served proudly on the Island of Leyte during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Army with the rank of Sergeant.

Bob worked in the Building / Wrecking trades before being appointed to the Waltham Fire Department on March 13, 1961. He was promoted to Lieutenant on May 31, 1970. He then earned the rank of Captain being promoted on June 18, 1983 and achieved the rank of Deputy Chief on July 23, 1988, retiring on September 29, 1991 after 30 ½ years of dedicated and faithful service to his beloved City of Waltham. For his entire career Bob was stationed at the Moody Street Fire Station.

Family was the most important aspect of his life. He loved vacationing with family and friends on Cape Cod and in Florida. In his spare time he enjoyed hunting, golfing & fishing.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years Marie (Brennan) Yorston, his devoted & loving daughters Karen M. Yorston of Waltham, Judith “Judi” Anderson and her husband Paul of Ipswich, Mary Ellen Ferolito and her husband Joseph of Reading, Patricia “Trisha” Yorston and her husband August “Gus” Muller of Wayland, his cherished grandchildren Valene, Andrew, Katherine, Vicki, Olivia, Craig and Drew, and his dear brother Richard Yorston of Marlborough. In addition he is survived by his close friends Ed Mahoney and Red Rotchford, many nieces, nephews & cousins.

Brother of the late Iris Yorston Gurney, Raymond, Lawrence, Ronald, Hilton, and Norman Yorston and nephew of the late Annie “Nan” Hayward.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Funeral Services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody St, WALTHAM on Friday morning May 17th at 9:00 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Robert’s Life at the Saint Charles Borromeo Church, 51 Hall St., Waltham at 10:00 a.m. Interment with Military & Fire Dept. Honors will follow at Mt. Feake Cemetery in Waltham. Visiting Hours will be held in the Funeral Home on Thursday May 16th from 3 - 7 p.m. Parking attendants on duty.
