Obituary for Sonja C. Granskou (Granskou)

Sonja Charlotte Granskou was born in Princeton, NJ and passed away in Boston, MA on August 4, 2017 after a lengthy and hard-fought battle with cancer. Sonja did everything in her power to educate herself on effective medical and alternative treatments and to bring her health to a place where her body could fight cancer and heal. Her family and friends watched with amazement as she rose to face cancer with dignity, bravery and humility. We will feel her love always.

Sonja was an opera singer, a clinical psychologist, and a music/art therapist. She was a mountain hiker, a kayaker and a canoeist. She loved music and nature, and those she encountered felt her strong and loyal love. To those around her, she gave and gave and gave. She was smart, inquisitive, creative, funny and oh so strong.

Sonja is survived by many: her mother Charlotte Granskou; her partner Dennis Donohue; her sister Mary Granskou; her sister Janet Granskou (Andrew Mamo); her brother John Granskou; her sister Sarah Granskou (Trevor Ewert); her nieces Grace and Natalie Mamo; her nephew and niece Soren and Solveg Ewert; many cousins; and many, many friends.

Thank you to everyone who helped Sonja fight cancer. You know who you are and Sonja’s family and partner are eternally grateful for the love and support you gave Sonja.

Sonja’s family will be forever grateful for the generosity and gestures, both big and small, from the extraordinary nurses and staff at Massachusetts General Hospital.

There will be a memorial service for Sonja at Frist Arlington Unitarian Universalist, 630 Massachusetts Ave, Arlington, MA on October 8, 2017 at 2:00 pm.
