Joseph Picone
Of Waltham, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 17, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. He was 100.
Born in Filicudi, Italy to the late Stefano and Nunziata (Giardina) Picone, he came to West Newton in 1932 when he was 14. He has been a longtime resident of Waltham.
When Joseph came to the United States he got a job working at Volante Farms in Newton with his brothers Felix and Salvatore. The pay was 10 cents an hour and they were happy to get it at a time when jobs were scarce. Mr. Picone also worked for Giardina's restaurant, and then construction for many years until he opened his own restaurant, Summor on Main St.
Mr. Picone was a talented cook who also loved to bake and grow his own vegetables. He cooked Sunday dinner for family and friends for most of his adult life and never let anyone go away hungry. He loved to travel with his wife AnnaMaria (Mary), fish, play bocce and bowling with friends until the age of 95. Most of all, he loved to be with his family and friends, who were all treated like family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years AnnaMaria (LaCava) Picone, his devoted children Stephen Picone and his wife Mary Hansen of Waltham, Sal Picone and his wife Gale (Cargill) of Scituate, Nancy Matthews and her husband Terry of Addison, TX, and Joseph M. Picone and his wife Carmela (Arena) of Belmont, his sister-in-law Frances (LaCava) Raczkowski of Waltham, and his cherished grandchildren Stephen Picone of Waltham, Andrea Grych and her husband Christian of Marlborough, Michael Picone of Fitchburg, Matthew Picone and his partner Rebecca McLaughlin of Waltham, Edward Fenochietti of Waltham, Gina Steele and her husband Dan Of Scituate, Jason Picone of Portland, OR, AnnMarie Picone of Belmont, and Joseph Picone of Watertown. He is also survived by 8 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Angelina Lopez, Felix Picone, and Salvatore Picone, and brother-in-law of the late John Raczkowski.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Cindy Bray, who helped take care of Joe for the last 2 1/2 years and to Ascend Hospice in Marlborough.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services from the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 773 Moody St., WALTHAM, Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 9 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial in celebration of Joseph's life at Sacred Heart Church, 311 River St., Waltham at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4-8 p.m. Parking attendants will be on duty.
