“You don’t need a lot of money to lead a rich life. Good friends and a loving family are worth their weight in gold.”
Joseph L. Burgoyne III, born on April 28, 1955 in Brighton, MA; beloved son of the late Joseph L. Burgoyne Jr. and Mary Rose (McLaughlin) Burgoyne, passed away suddenly Friday morning February 16, 2018 at the Miriam Hospital in Providence, RI at the age of 62. He was a proud, lifelong resident of the City of Waltham, a place he loved to call home.
Joe’s proudest accomplishment in life was his 40 years of marriage to the love of his life Trisha Walsh. The couple met in 1971 as teenagers while summering in Green Harbor. Together, they built a life that revolved around the shared values of faith, family and friends. Their greatest pride and joy in life was their family and devoted circle of friends.
At the age of 12, Joe started working for his family business Ideal Concrete Block, Co., Inc. founded in 1923. As a third generation owner of Ideal with his brothers, Joe continued his family’s tradition of serving the local community. His natural talent for networking and ability to form lasting relationships was a tremendous asset to the company. Joe was a graduate of Waltham High School Class of 1973 and attended Bryant & Stratton Business School.
Joe, an active member of the Massachusetts Retail Lumber Association (MRLDA) for the last 41 years, served as Chairman of their Legislative Committee and received MRLDA’s most prestigious Lumber Person of the Year Award in 2008. He was also a member of the Northeast Retail Lumber Association (NRLA), Mass Building Congress, New England Concrete Masonry Association and the International Order of Hoo-Hoo, previously serving as Deputy Supreme Nine JI and past President of the Harry L. Folsom Club #13.
Joe’s affable personality put all at ease, whether you were meeting him for the first time or knew him well. His warm smile and willingness to always extend his hand, engaged many in conversation that often ended with “Let me know if there is anything I can do for you.”
He was dedicated to the community of Waltham and belonged to numerous boards and clubs: the Waltham Community Access Cable Commission, the Waltham West Suburban Chamber of Commerce, the Waltham Boys & Girls Club, the Waltham Lions Club, the Waltham Lodge of Elks B.P.O.E. #953, the Waltham Sons of Italy Dante Algheri Lodge # 648, Our Lady’s Parish and School, North Waltham Little League, Waltham High School Gridiron and Girl’s Lacrosse Booster clubs, and was a member of Bentley University’s Parents Executive Committee. Joe’s selflessness and generosity was formally recognized when he was bestowed the 2017 Community Achievement Award by the Waltham Chamber of Commerce.
He will be remembered as a community leader, philanthropist and family man that loved life. He especially enjoyed golfing, playing bocce, family vacations, traveling with his wife and spending summers sitting on the Dion’s deck in Marshfield.
