Obituary for Rosario C. "Russ" Malone

Rosario “Russ” Malone of Waltham entered into eternal rest peacefully at his home in Waltham on September 16, 2018. He was 75 years old.

Russ was born on April 27, 1943 to the late Charles and Adele Malone. He was raised in Waltham, and spent the summers at his family’s home in Scituate, MA. Russ graduated from Waltham High School in 1962. He served honorably with the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Business Management from Eastern Nazarene College.

On September 9, 1972, Russ married the love of his life, Nancy and they settled in Waltham. He ran two businesses: C.Malone Trucking and Formal Oil, which he founded in 1981. ​Russ served as Councilor-at-Large from 1993 to 2001, and as chairman of the Finance Committee from 1996 to 1999. He also chaired the Special Committee on Public Safety and served on the Veterans, Community Development, and License and Franchise committees of the city council. In 2001, he was appointed as the City Clerk, and in 2009, he was elected president of the Massachusetts City Clerks Association.

Russ was devoted to his job as Waltham’s City Clerk until his retirement earlier this year. He always referred to City Hall as his second home. He treasured his family and friends and had a strong faith in God. He enjoyed visiting his favorite restaurants, listening to oldies music, and spending time in Scituate by the ocean. He recently took a trip to the Kentucky Derby, a lifelong dream of his as his father had owned racehorses years ago.

He was a community leader who loved the city of Waltham and the people in it. He will be remembered by his family and friends for his loyalty, his kindness, his strong integrity, and his quick wit. Russ will be remembered as a man who was always​ true to himself, his family, his God, and his city.

Awards: Waltham Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award The Salvation Army Community Service Award The Chamber of Commerce Community Involvement Award The Tom and Robert McNamara Bristol Lodge Community Involvement Award Waltham Police Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award, United States Coast Guard Outstanding Shipmate Award.

Beloved husband for 42 years to the late Nancy J. (Niquette) Malone.

Russ is survived by his devoted & loving daughters Tracy Malone-Black and her husband Corey Black of Billerica, and Cara Malone and her loving companion Franco Paola of Waltham, his cherished grandchildren Bryn and Bowen, and dear siblings Rosalie Tashjian and her husband John of Wellesley, Camille Poynton and her husband David of Lexington, Alfeo Malone and his wife the late Pamela of Woburn, Charles "Chuck" Malone and his companion Anita Hill of Waltham, John Malone and his wife Carole of Sudbury and Joseph Malone and his wife Linda of Scituate. In addition he is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours while Russ Lies in State at Waltham City Hall, 610 Main Street on Thursday Sept. 20th from 3 - 7 p.m. and again in the Brasco & Sons Memorial Funeral Home, 773 Moody Street, WALTHAM on Friday Sept. 21st from 3 - 7 p.m. Funeral Services in celebration of Rosario's Life will be held from the Brasco & Sons Memorial Funeral Home on Saturday morning Sept. 22nd at 10:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church, 311 River Street, Waltham at 11:00 a.m. Committal Services will follow at Newton Cemetery.
