Emile Durzi

Of Cambridge, passed away, Saturday, November 3, 2018. He was 76.

Born in Haifa, Palestine to the late Simon and Doreen Durzi, he emigrated to Cairo when he was 6 years old and then to Cambridge when he was 17 and lived between there and Belmont for the rest of his life.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Northeastern University in Electrical Engineering. After working several years as an electrical engineer, Emile opened and owned the Algiers Restaurant in Harvard Square for 46 years before it recently closed.

In his spare time, Emile collected antique books, stamps, and oriental rugs. He was an accomplished organist and an avid theologist. He was also a lifelong proponent of the Palestinian people and helped many international students in the Boston area while they studied there.

He is survived by his loving sons Sultan Durzi and Sharif Durzi who he raised in Belmont.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a Funeral Service in celebration of Emile’s life at the Christ Church Cambridge, Zero Garden St., Cambridge, Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at 11 am. Interment will follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at the Brasco & Sons Memorial, 325 Trapelo Rd., BELMONT, Monday from 3 -7 pm. Parking attendants will be on duty.
