Obituary for Mary E. Livermore (McManus)

Mary Elizabeth Livermore (McManus)
September 6, 1918 – May 3, 2020

Of Waltham, passed away peacefully on Sunday May 3rd, 2020.

Beloved wife of the late George M. Livermore. Loving mother of the late George M. Livermore Jr. and Lawrence Livermore. Mary will be missed by her loving children MaryAnne and her husband Roger Guthrie of SC; John Livermore (late wife Kathleen McCluskey Livermore) of Rockland; Ruth Turner and husband Thomas Cusick of Waltham; Susan and husband Anthony DerGarabedian of VA; and Kathleen Mansfield of IL. Mary is also survived by her beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Mary was born in Boston and raised in Framingham. Growing up, she enjoyed walking to Framingham Center, shopping at the Five and Dime, and attending St. Stephen’s Church just around the corner.

Summers were spent swimming at Lake Waushakum, Learned Pond, and visiting her aunts in Jamaica Plain and Manchester-by-the-Sea.

Weekends, she and her friends would borrow a car and drive to Newton for dancing and listening to the “Big Bands” at the Totem Pole. Going on shopping trips to Boston with her older sisters was always a treat.
She worked at Tellacron, the Five and Dime, the Waldof, and The Boston Edison Company, where she met her husband to be.

After they married, they settled in Waltham and raised their family. The Livermore house on the corner of Thornton Road was the gathering spot where the neighborhood kids joined the Livermore “six” to play while Mary treated the other mothers to her delicious baked goods and coffee.

A wonderful memory is the family’s yearly summer trip to York Beach, Maine.

Mary enjoyed people. She worked retail at Park Snow’s and later as a bookkeeper at Garden City Oil Co. She enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, raising violets, refinishing furniture, Emily Rooney, Newsweek, Anna Quinlan, and the Antique Road Show.

Mary will be remembered for her deep love of her family, her beautiful smile, and her generous caring nature.

She will be missed by her loving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family, and dear friends.

In April, 2018, at almost 100, Mary passed on these words of wisdom:
“Be patient with yourself.”

During this difficult time, these are words to take to heart.

The Livermore Family prays you all stay well and join us at a later date when it is safe to gather to celebrate Mary’s long life.

For the safety of those we love and care about during this difficult time, funeral services will be private.

During this time of extreme need, expressions of sympathy in Mary's memory may be made to the Greater Boston Food Bank, 70 South Bay Ave. Boston, Ma. 02118.
