Obituary for Thomas Edward "Sonny" O'Callaghan

Of Somerville, passed away peacefully on November 30th, 2018 with his son by his side at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge at the age of 88.

Born on August 15, 1930 in Cambridge; beloved son of John O'Callaghan and Katherine (Callahan) O'Callaghan, Sonny was raised in Belmont and has been a Somerville resident for the past 25 years.

As a young man, Sonny enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at the age of 18, and later re-enlisted with the United States Army serving proudly during the Korean War. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star during the Korean War. He was a member of the Joseph F. Hill American Legion Post #156 and the John M. Sullivan Veterans of Foreigns Wars Post #10334 in Waltham.

After, returning home from service to his country he began his career with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and worked at the Walter E. Fernald State School for 44 years.

Sonny loved to socialize and follow Boston sports.

Beloved husband of the late Patricia M. (Green) O'Callaghan, loving father of the late Robert "Bobby" O'Callaghan, Valarie Green, and Kimberly O'Callaghan, and dear brother of the late Marguerite Connor.

He is survived by his devoted & loving son John T. O'Callaghan of South Boston, his cherished grandchildren Kristina, Michele, Erika and Kimberly, and great granddaughters Kiera and Gabriella.

A Graveside Funeral Service with United States Army Military Honors in celebration of his life was held private for his family at Belmont Cemetery.
