Obituary for Carolyn "Carol" Cohen (Autilio)

Cohen, Carolyn Phyllis (Autilio)

Of Belmont, Mass. passed away peacefully at the age of 77 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s and Lewy Body Dementia.

Carol was born on July 1, 1944 in the city of Boston. She proudly grew up in East Boston where she lived with her parents Mary Autilio (Giangregorio) and Umberto Autilio.

Carol graduated from East Boston High School. She enjoyed working in Downtown Boston in her early twenties. Like the origin of her name, Carol’s true calling and passion was singing. Carol sang in many clubs in her mid twenties and even recorded two 45’s. Many friends and relatives have known her to belt out a Connie Francis tune (or two) at family functions. Her daughters and grandchildren have countless memories of her singing and dancing with them. After raising her family, she enjoyed singing in her church choir. She became a prominent member of Saint Luke’s in Belmont and Sacred Heart in Lexington, serving as a volunteer and being the church cantor. Carol had a deep sense of morality and compassion for those in need.

Although she always felt like she did not accomplish enough in life, she did so much for others. Carol was incredibly selfless and was a mom to many. She made people feel good about themselves with her caring words, warm smile, and acts of kindness.

Carol was a familiar face in Belmont and had friends wherever she traveled. Being a city girl, she missed the noise the city offered and Carol enjoyed hearing her grandchildren laugh and play. She loved being Nonnie and of course, feeding them an abundant amount of sugar. She will be remembered for her caring personality, her love of family, her gift of song, and her ability to push food onto others despite being full.

Carol is predeceased by her husband Gerson “Coke” Cohen.

She leaves behind her daughters Dianne (Cohen) DeChellis and Brian DeChellis of Maynard, and Roseann (Cohen) Thebado and Ernest Thebado of Belmont. She loved being Nonnie to Jackson, Liam, Colin, and Camryn. She leaves her eldest brother Frederick Autilio of Boston and her adoring (and adorable) younger brother, Joseph Autilio. Carol is survived by many of her cherished cousins and close friends.
